GeoPark Info Center at the
Speleologic Museum Laichinger Tiefenhöhle
The GeoPark Schwäbische Alb is a national, European and global Geopark of the UNESCO.
It is the international approval of the geologic importance of the Schwäbische Alb (Swabian Jura).
The area offers:
- Rocks of the Jurassic with an extraordinary high amount of fossils.
Most important are the dinosaurs of Holzmaden, the coral reef of Gerstetten
and ammonites of Dotternhausen.
Thats why it is sometimes called Jurassic Park.
- Volcanism in connection with crater lakes locally called Hüle,
geothermic energy and numerous spas.
- Karst with all of its typical features: thousands of caves, twelve show
caves, and romantic karst springs like the Blautopf.
- The Nördlinger Ries and the Steinheimer Becken are two extraordinary
meteor craters.
- Mining, starting with the silex mining in the Stone age to the iron
ore mining of Wasseralfingen.
- The impresive escarpment of the Schwäbische Alb, the northern rim which
is more than 200m high, is the most impressive escarpment of the
Süddeutschen Schichtstufenlandschaft (south German escarpments).
At the Laichinger Tiefenhöhle, integrated into the Höhlenkundliches
Museum (Museum of Speleology), is an information center of the GeoPark
Schwäbische Alb.
It opens in the Passion Week, the week before Easter, and closes
at the end of fall holidays in Baden Württemberg, which is usually in
early November.
It is open daily from 9 to 18 (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
The information center is - like the museum - free.
It offers information about the Park and the other geotopes of the Swabian Jura.
