The Laichinger Tiefenhöhle

The Vertical Cave of Laichingen

GeoPark InfoStelle
GeoPark Infostelle

Welcome to the Tiefenhöhle!

The Tiefenhöhle is a vertical cave, which means it has numerous shafts, connected by short horizontal passages. Thirteen shafts begin around 15 meters below ground and reach a depth of up to 80 meters below ground. The tour path descents on steep iron staircases to a depth of 55 meters. This is the only vertical cave open to the public in Germany.

The Tiefenhöhle was formed inside a fossilized Jurassic reef. It offers a unique insight into the geologic strucuture of the Swabian Jura. The shafts show various erosional and corrosional forms, fossils and extraordinary speleothems like cave coral. This geotope is part of the GeoPark Schwäbische Alb.

The cave visit may be combined with a visit to the Höhlenkundliches Museum (speleologic museum). There is a cave bistro with beer garden at the entrance, a playground for children and a barbecue area.

The descent on steep iron staircases requires some surefootedness. Gaiters are provided to protect the trousers of the visitors from the inevitable cave clay on the staircases. The cave is not suitable for persons with heart diseases or walking disabilities. There are some narrow passages, so the cave visit is also not suitable for people suffering from claustrophobia.
