1. Old Entrance and Discovery Cleft

Alter Eingang und Entdeckerspalt

The Laichinger Tiefenhöhle is a mainly vertical cave.

Its shafts reach a depth of up to 80 m. The visitor's route goes down to a depth of 55 m. The total length of both horizontal and vertical passages is approx. 1300 m. of which roughly a quarter (320 m) is accessible to the public.

The cave was discovered in 1892 by Johann Georg Mack, an inhabitant of Laichingen, whilst digging for dolomitic sand. With his shovel he by chance opened the "discovery cleft" in front of which you are now standing and into which you may look down to a depth 20 m below the surface.
